The year 2013 is the year of the European Citizenship. This theme was also dealt on the conference organised by the Office of the European Ombudsman held in the premises of the European Parliament in Brussels on the 23rd April 2013, which we attended.

This event was fully reproduced in about 30 countries in Europe and was lead in a very open ambiance. But the European ombudsman, Nikoforos Diamandouros, the European Commission by its vice-presidents, Viviane Reding and Maroš Šefčovič and the Office of the President of the European Parliament by I. Durant were presented at this event., as were the Third sector. Members of the third sector informed particularly about the European Citizens´ Initiatives and about successful projects that were realised by a voluntary citizen initiative.

All speakers confirmed that the problem of the EU is the lack of faith in the EU by its citizens and a lack of mobilisation of citizens in pro-European activities. It is necessary to bring closer European politics and information so they would be accessible and clear for citizens to whom they are addressed.

European Union with the citizens, not about them. V. Reding
